statement of intent.
For unit 3 I would like to look at ruins and castles and how these can possibly be portrayed in textiles, particularly in costume design. As I would like to study costume design next year I thought it a good idea to have a look at the history of costume within this unit and to try to incorporate it into the project. Therefore I would like to first research into the costume of the Tudors and possibly those like Dick Turpin and then move on to research into castles and ruins.
To collect first hand photos for this unit I will visit the many fully intact castles and those that have been reduced to rubble, within the north east area. I will also look at other ruins such as monasteries and possibly bridges. When I first think of castles that are now just ruins, I think of Dunstanburgh and Warkworth Castle so first I will look at these, but then I will probably move onto researching and visiting fully intact castles like Bamburgh, Lindisfarne and Alnwick. I will also re-visit other ruins like Housesteads Roman Fort and Mount Grace Priory, a monastery in Yorkshire.
Artists I would like to look at are those that portray ruins, whether they are castles or another building, rather than focusing completely on artists that do castles that are intact and in their original splendour. Examples of those I hope to look at are; Joseph Turner, Charles-Louis Clerisseau, Viviano Codazzi and Leonardo Coccorante. However these are all traditional artists so I hope to also look at a more modern artist to compare with.
Designers I hope to look at are those who portray structure within their designs and those who use a palette of colour like that of a castle or ruins. When first thinking of which artists to look at, my first idea was to look at Ma Ke Wuyong as her work looks like rock like material. I would also like to look at Rei Kawakubo and Alexander McQueen.
